Most of us operate with the same quiet picture of God — he's up there, we're down here, and religion is the project of closing that gap enough to stay in his good graces. There's a version of the sex talk that a lot of us got growing up — awkward, rushed, heavy with either giggles or guilt. Maybe it came from a parent who clearly wanted to be anywhere else in the world. Maybe it came from a youth group where the message basically boiled down to don't, don't, don't — and if you even think about it too hard, something's probably wrong with you.
